By using superfield techniques, the effective potential of the Wess-Zumino model with $\mathcal{N}=1$ in three dimensions is computed off-shell up to two-loop. It is shown that supersymmetry is not broken, and that dynamical generation of mass does not occur perturbatively. We also investigate the renormalization of the effective potential in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme and determine the renormalization group beta function, showing that this model is infrared free. Our results indicate some misconceptions in the literature.
